THE GREAT DEPRESSION
- 1930s were a quieter time for fashion- much of the youthfulness went away
- curves were rediscovered so fashion trends (such as belts) started emphasizing waists and busts, also backs were more revealed
- during the 30s skirts got longer but by the end of the decade they raised again
- the ideal look was to be curvy and slim
- a women that was slim and dressed well was looked upon as smart and successful
- despite the great depression many women went on diets so that they would have a more slender look
- younger women got fashions inspiration from movies, department stores, catalogs, and magazines which shows what was current and stylish
- it was rare for women to purchase one of a kind fashions because they were so expensive, they wanted to buy things that were on sale which were usually mass produced items
- to make clothing more affordable manufacturers starting making clothing that wasn’t fully finished, the difficult sewing would be completed but sewing up the seams and hem would be left to the buyer, this wasn’t particularly popular though
- what was more common was purchasing your own fabrics and creating your own clothing
- printed fabrics also became very common because if people spilled stains on them they weren’t as noticeable than they would look on solid fabrics so this cut cleaning costs
