- People were able to manipulate their social statuses based off of their appearances; they were socially accepted based upon how fashionable their clothing was.

- Teens bought clothes to help gain popularity; they wanted the latest styles and colors.
- No one wanted to be caught with trends that were old-fashioned or out of date because it would show society that they were not able to afford the latest styles, therefore giving them a lower social status.
- Women would invest a large amount of their money towards clothes and argued that rich men would find them more attractive than women who did not care about what they wore or dressed frumpy.
