FLAPPERS
- Flappers were known as the rebels. They went against what was “good” in society and created a new, more modern take on things. This affected the culture because they changed the whole misconception about women being incredibly feminine. Flappers started to show the country that women were more than someone that would cook and clean for their husbands. They began to drink, smoke, and drive cars which previously were all roles that only men would play in society. This of course went against many of society's norms.
- What started out as a form of rebelling against tradition adapted into a lifestyle for girls/young women.
- Flappers were also very common within films. This strengthened the economy because more people were going to see these new types of films with these new and different types of characters.
- Flappers wore straightened silhouettes that were associated with a boyish figure.
This was a poem that was featured in a flapper magazine in the 1920s. It came out when flappers were becoming popular and many people (especially the older generation) did not like them or their ideals because they were radicals. Flappers wore shorter skirts and had shorter hair both non-traditional styles in this generation. Although the older people did not like them this article seems to be for the flappers and could possibly be either written by a flapper or at least written by someone in the younger generation.
Below is a clip of a 1920s movie showing the fashion that flappers wore.
